Company: D' Origen Café Perú S.A.C Associate Code CCL: 00056604.1
Coffee is everyone's favorite beverage to start the day. Its aroma and flavor helps us connect with our essence to recharge us with energy and motivate us to fulfill all our activities.
Marcela Aguayo and Fiorella Rouillon are two lovers of this product and took their passion much further. They decided to share their vision of what it is to enjoy a good coffee through their own brand: Cerella.
Conectados spoke with the founders of this company that also promotes the growth and promotion of the work of coffee growers.
How was Cerella born?
Fiorella: As a dedicated mom for 5 years, I wanted to do something different. In a conversation between friends, always with coffee in hand, we decided to work on a project together. We both have a passion for coffee and decided to do something related to this taste.
Marcela: Venía 20 años del mundo corporativo y quería emprender algo propio. Reflexioné en qué podía hacer y junto a Fiorella, con quien compartimos una pasión por el café, teníamos un sueño de tener nuestra propia marca con este producto.
How was the process of creating the company?
Marcela: Peru is in the eyes of the world for exporting good coffee. More than 90% of our specialty coffee goes abroad, so when we analyzed it and saw the opportunity, we connected business and passion: Passion for coffeebecause it is in our daily lives, and business, because it is important to make known what good coffee is and who is behind it.
Fiorella: The challenge was to maintain the same quality of coffee over time and this only happens when you work with one or several direct producers, not with associations or cooperatives. So, we found our purpose in spreading the culture of good Peruvian coffee, but also in promoting and revaluing the work of the coffee growers, who are the ones who carry the hardest part of the work and who, many times, are not well remunerated.
Why is it called Cerella?
Marcela: It is a union between the word cherry and the second part of the name of both Fiorella and Marcela. We wanted to give it a feminine touch, we wanted to orient it towards women.
Fiorella: In the packaging you can see that it is a very feminine coffee. The name went with the identity and with the person we wanted to connect with: That woman who gets up every day to train, to work, to have breakfast with her children or who goes out with her friends.
What was or is the biggest challenge?
Marcela: Dealing with the coffee growers was one of the biggest challenges, due to the lack of trust because of the bad experience they have had with people or companies that do not value their work, that have not treated them well or do not pay them correctly. So, seeing two girls who are just starting out with this generated mistrust.
Fiorella: But the treatment has already changed a lot, because we have been working in an orderly fashion, promoting their work and meeting payment deadlines. In addition, they are clear that our work is long-term and has a clear purpose.
What is a specialty coffee?
Marcela: A specialty coffee is a coffee that has to have a cup score and a certification, according to the Specialty Coffee Association. We work with producers from Junin and San Martin, so we find varieties of coffee, which can be by plant, harvest and so on. The specialty coffee is an artisanal coffee and low in caffeine. When we certify this, we receive the sensory notes.
How would you describe your coffee?
Fiorella: The Junín coffee is very much aligned with women because it is a coffee with sweet notes, chocolatey, with panela and low acidity. San Martin is a coffee with tropical fruits, with more acidity than Junin and planted at a lower altitude, which is a point that impacts the coffee.
How have you noticed the public's reception?
Marcela: Visibly, it has generated attraction and good reception for buying it. And already when tasting it, there are good results because they find it tastes good. I think Cerella's impact is due to the fact that Fiorella and I are very committed to dissemination, because we also participate in women's business communities or guilds, so that more people can get to know the product.
